October 3, 2016
This week has been awesome. We have been really busy and suddenly it went from 90 degrees on Monday to 50 degrees and raining during the weekend. The Winter here in Oregon is beginning to come upon us. I love it here in the Burg, it is always an adventure.
This last P day we were able to go on a little adventure with Sister Harker. We thought that we wouldn't be able to go because we got a call asking us to be a companion for a sister who was transferring. Well instead we made it so we could bring Sister Dobbins with us! Sister Harker took us hiking to some local waterfalls, the only one we were able to end up going to was Grotto falls. But man was it gorgeous, I loved every second. And we literally only hiked for 15 minutes. It was good to get out of the Burg and to be able to see what Oregon is all about. Also it was awesome to spend time with Sister Harker. She says the funniest things, but also things that just make you think. Don't worry I took notes. At one point she started talking about promises. She said that she had just emailed her son about this and thought it was interesting. She said, "Sister Harrison, do you keep your promises you make to people?" Defensively I said yes. Well she then went on to say that beyond everything else, one reason she stays so strong to the gospel is because she wants to be a promise keeper. And man I loved that. She then talked about less active people and how you just want to shake them and tell them what about your promises?! Lol she is hilarious. At one point she then asked what was our easiest commandment to keep, which sounds like a weird question but it gave for pretty good conversation in the car. Then we got on the topic of church attendance. Sister Harker compared going to one hour of church like filling up your car with $5, it's going to get you places, but it's not going to get you to where you need to be. I loved that imagery and how we need to go to all of church to be able to get all of the fuel we need for our whole week. Sister Harker is awesome. We then went to lunch at bagel tree, a local bagel shop in town that actually has bagels hanging from a tree, and man, was it good.
Once upon a time before we went on the hike with Sister Harker we decided to download emails at the church. Well some how Sister Dobbins did something to our car door and it wouldn't close. It was kind of funny, three sister missionaries staring at a car door trying to get it to close, lol. Anyone driving by would have thought we were crazy for sure. Don't worry we got it fixed!
During transfers an Elder lost his iPad and couldn't find it. Sister Sorensen and I had a whole conversation about how ridiculous it was that he lost it, how could you lose an iPad? Well while we were at our dinner on Monday Sister Sorensen asked me to grab her iPad from her bag, well sure enough it was missing. Don't worry it was just in our apartment, but still, it gave us a good laugh!
We did service at UCAN this week, and it had been awhile since we had been there. It is a local food bank and usually we go through the food that people have donated and such. Well usually I just follow Sister Nowell's lead, well she is gone now and I realized out of all the sisters I have been there doing service the longest, and really I was the only one that knew what she was doing. It was super weird because part of me felt like I have only been here for a short time then I realized 12 weeks is a really long time! But it was a lot of fun, we ended up doing orders for people and wrapping pallets.
This week we were able to have a lesson with Candy at the Family History Center, to work on her account. Well when she got there we realized that she didn't have any of her account information so we had to go back to her apartment and find the stuff, and didn't find anything, so next week we are starting out from scratch! But I am excited to learn more about family history, who knows maybe this will get me started and wanting to do more of my own family history!
This week at a members home they decided to practice Thanksgiving dinner on us to see how it's going to go, well we didn't complain. Although it was really hard for us to stay awake afterwards, we were in a little bit of a turkey coma!
It crazy to me how positive someone can stay during the trials of their faith. We have a less active right now who at the end of September, meaning this week, will be homeless. And man I would be freaking out. Yet she has gotten her tent and her sleeping bag and she is ready to go to the nearest campground unless some miracle happens. I am going to continue to pray for her, but man am I so grateful for the situation that I am in. She is so positive because she knows she has a Ward family that loves her and will take care of her if it comes down to it. I hope she is right. It is important for us during these trials to continue being positive so that we may keep our attitudes high, I am so grateful for her example.
In the Melrose Ward we have an amazing Activity Days leader. She has taken upon herself to utilize the Ward mission plan and to be able to get her Activity Day Girls involved with missionary work. She came up with an activity where the girls would go through a sort of "MTC" where they would learn about missions and then be able to learn how to teach the restoration in their own words. Then the next week they would go on their "Mission" and teach our real investigators. And man it was awesome! This week the girls were able to put on their little program and were able to recite what they had memorized, the spirit was very strong, these girls were awesome missionaries in training. But the best part was that we had non members in the program! The family that we are currently teaching has gotten their girls involved in Activity Days so they had their parts! It was so cool to have them working with members and learning more about what we believe in. They also had on little missionary tags, man they were just adorable, I wish I would've gotten a picture!
Sister Sorensen was sick this week and spent one of the day's laying down, hoping to not get more sick. These are really boring days as a missionary. But it is important to keep our bodies healthy, otherwise we would be of no use!
Sister Harker asked us to show up at her house this week while her non member friend was over. It was her plot to show her friend that she is a member of the church and that missionaries are a part of her life without throwing gospel on her. It was fun and we got to visit with her a little bit. Then once she left Sister Harker offered to take us to Dairy Queen, how could we turn down a blizzard!
This week we were able to see our investigator who was supposed to be on date for baptism. She had a close friend pass away and has been having a hard time so we haven't been able to see her for a good couple of weeks. So for rescue night I went with Emily Harker and we saw her. She was home and we really had a great chat. we invited her to conference, she said she might come so that was a plus. We scheduled a church tour with her for next week. She has been investigating to church for over two years and has not yet come to church once, hopefully Sister Sorensen and I can get her there!
During Rescue Night, Emily Harker has been talking about a co worker and about the church, really she is still in missionary mode and she is trying to convert everyone at work, lol. But anyway she some how got this ladies address, but she couldn't find the sticky note where she wrote it down. So she tried to think of it on the top of her head and we ended up in an old folks home parking lot driving around trying to find this ladies car. Oh my goodness missionaries are probably the best stalkers ever. We didn't find her but we will one day!
One thing that is hard coming from training is that I was so used to doing things a certain way with Sister Nowell, now I am with Sister Sorensen and she was trained a little bit differently, not drastically. But there is a difference. So now I am stuck in the middle trying to make myself happy. It can be difficult, I am a pretty stubborn person, I'm trying to cope, lol.
We had a really awesome district meeting. Our district for this transfer consists of the sisters and elders in our Ward obviously, but then also a set of sisters from our zone, it's going to be a lot of fun. Although Elder Mafi, our district leader, told us the day before that we would have district meeting outside. Well when we woke up in the morning it was 50 degrees outside, so we obviously thought that would change. Nope when we got to the church we saw chairs and a table set up waiting for us! It is time that I buy a coat for the winter, lol. Elder Mafi said when we began to protest, "We are all going outside and hopefully we don't get diabetes!" And then he walked away and we were all laughing very confused, we had our lesson and we survived to tell the tale, we all might be sick but that is okay!
In district meeting we talked about a subject that a lot of us have been running into lately. And that is when we show up for lessons that were scheduled, that people have an excuse that they can't meet with us. This is something I've never really known how to deal with, but we talked about being bold in these situations. We scheduled an appointment, the investigators should know that. But there was also a line that they suggested, I came from Utah, 1,000 miles away from home, to serve for 18 months, teaching a message that I believe in. And that is why I want to meet with you. I loved this, showing the sacrifice that we have given to the people that we are trying to teach. Sister Sorensen and I are going to try this out next time we run into that situation.
This week I decided that everyday should be a Friday, and some how I am going to make that a thing. Mine and Sister Sorensen's best days for finding have been Friday's, seriously we will go all week without finding a single person, then all of a sudden on Friday we find abundance of people! I can't even believe it. It's fine, we are just going to try to make everyday a Friday.
In our Zone we got a new set of Elders in the Roseburg Ward, so as a Zone we decided after district meeting to go out and help them find new investigators. Well Sister Sorensen and I were tracting a street and we had no luck. Then the last house on the street there was a man outside working on his car, in our heads we thought perfect! Well he was very nice and told us to go talk to the people inside. So we did, and it was very strange, the conversation went something like this:
Sister Harrison: Hello we are sister missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and today we are sharing a message about Jesus Christ, do you have a faith in Christ?
Lady: No.
Sister Sorensen: That's okay, have you seen missionaries around before?
Then the lady totally turned her back to us and completely ignored us! There was probably 5 people in the room and they all completely ignored us! It was crazy! And really funny, better luck next time I guess?
We had a lesson with a less active this week and she talked about how she had an ah ha moment with the gospel this week, and that made me think about the ah ha moments that I have had in my life. Then during my personal study I was finishing my conference talks from April and I read Elder Hollands talk, in there he talked about making sure that we keep those moments with us forever, so they help us through the hard parts in life. So I would love to hear your ah ha moments if you feel like sharing with me, send me an email or even a letter! Thanks fan club!
In the Melrose Ward we have been trying to get Ward missionaries more involved in the work, well our Ward mission leader is awesome and during correlation he told us the game plan. They are going to be calling Ward missionaries for 3 months at a time, so they don't get burned out so easily, and this will be happening hopefully before the next Sunday! Then these Ward missionaries will be given a sheet of the responsibilities they have as a Ward missionary, for example one night a week they will be out with the missionaries on splits doing work! We are so excited. We are also getting together boxes of supplies for the Ward missionaries to keep in their car, just like we do, so if they ever have an opportunity to share they gospel, they can! We are so excited to be doing this work.
So I have a challenge for anyone reading this letter, you know who you are. I want you to write down your testimony of the Book of Mormon, if it's 2 sentences or 2 paragraphs, I want to read them! And if you don't feel like you have a testimony of the Book of Mormon, read it, pray about it. The Book of Mormon is a book with a promise, if you ask with a sincere heart, you will know for yourself it is true. Commit to reading it, for me I have a goal to finish it before Christmas, make your own goal and stick to its, let me know how it goes!
Once upon a time Sister Sorensen and I were tracting a street, and this truck pulled up next to us and this Mexican guy was asking for directions to somewhere in town. Well we told him how to get there then he just kept smiling and started telling us we were beautiful. Super creepy. Then we realized we smelt alcohol and saw an open bottle of beer in the cup holder, we walked away and he drove away but only to the end of the street kind of by our car. I personally was ready to leave but Sister Sorensen was persistent to knocking one more door, well she was definitely listening to the spirit because in this time of need we actually tracked into a potential and set up an appointment with her. She let us talk on and on about the Book of Mormon and at the end told us she wanted to read it! It was awesome, and by the end the crazy Mexican guy was gone. Thank goodness.
This week a member made taco soup for dinner. It reminded me of home, it was so yummy and delicious. It was a perfect fall day, taco soup was needed.
Is it just because I am a missionary or was missionary work really emphasized this conference? I felt like all Saturday was strictly missionary work and I loved it! I need to go back an listen to all of it, again. Conference as a missionary is like the Super Bowl and Christmas rolled into one. I was so excited to be able to hear from our leaders and to be directed. I hope that everyone was able to receive answers to their prayers and receive some guidance a for the trails they may be facing, I know that I did!
We watched conference at the church for all the sessions except Saturday Morning. A member invited us over to have cinnamon rolls! When we arrived to her house we found blankets and pillows and cinnamon rolls waiting for us. She served a mission and said she knows what it's like being away from home for conference and such, it was seriously a tender mercy. But every other session we went to the church. Saturday, October 1st was the one year anniversary for the shooting here in town. So there was a lot of memorial stuff going on, they had a race in the morning then they did activities through out the day. So when we went tracting on Saturday we really had no luck. Saturday night they had a candle light service and surprisingly they invited a member from our stake presidency to speak! They talked about the light and coming to light during our hard times. We really wish that we could've gone, but our mission president tells us to stay away from large crowds. And seeing that they were estimating 1,000 people to show up we thought, mmmmm better not. We haven't heard anything about it but I am sure it went great!
On Sunday we ate dinner at our Ward Mission Leaders home, and we are goat. This is probably the strangest thing I have eaten on my mission in Oregon so that's probably not saying much but, I was still pretty reluctant. It was actually really good! Reminded me kept beef!
For the past 4ish weeks we have found ourselves at the Harkers every Friday night for dessert. Sister Harker just texts us and we show up. Well this week she texted us saying she had extra pizza, but we didn't see the message until later in the evening. Our response to her was "was this a plot to get us over for missionary Friday?" she responded yeah probably subconsciously! Well we couldn't go over that night so Sunday they made us cookies and we stopped by for a minute, I love the members in the Melrose Ward.

Well Sister Sorensen kept talking and we got the Book of Mormon through the door and she said she would read it!
Alright Fan Club, I hope that you have a wonderful week this week! Don't forget about the wonderful things that we learned about in our past weekend. Have a great week!
Love, Your Favorite Sister Missionary,
Sister Harrison

Well Sister Sorensen kept talking and we got the Book of Mormon through the door and she said she would read it!
Conference was
just so amazing. One of the Sister Missionaries compared Conference to
the Missionaries Super Bowl. I loved this comparison. When we saw the
missionary choir during the Saturday Afternoon Session, Sister Sorensen
turned to me and said, "Sister, we just missed it!" My response, "Yeah,
by 4 months!" hahaha it is crazy that 4 months has passed since we have
been in the mission. I love it here in Oregon. The MTC was an amazing
experience but I am really glad that I am here in Oregon now. But I will
tell you when I heard the missionaries singing Called to Serve I wanted
to be in the MTC again hearing 2000 of us singing together, I do miss
that, a lot.
What was your favorite
conference talk? And most importantly, how are you going to apply it
into your life? These are questions that I have been asking myself since
conference ended. I loved all the talks from conference, but one of the
talks that keeps coming to my mind was the one by K. Brett Nattress, I
think he was of the 70. He was focusing his talk to parents I am pretty
sure but it really got me thinking as a missionary. He told the story of
his Mom sitting at the dinner table reading the Book of Mormon to him,
and he told his mom, "Mom, why are you doing this to us? Mom, I am not
even listening." And his mother responded, "If I read the Book of Mormon
to my children everyday, I will not lose them. And I will not lose
you." I felt the spirit so strongly when I heard those words. I will not
lose you. So many times in the missionary work, and in our day to day
lives people are lost. It is important to not lose those people that are
close to us. I loved this talk and I learned a lot from it. I know that
as we read and re read these talks we will be able to find new insights
as to how our Heavenly Father can help us in our lives. So let me know
what your favorite conference talk was and why! I would love to hear it!Alright Fan Club, I hope that you have a wonderful week this week! Don't forget about the wonderful things that we learned about in our past weekend. Have a great week!
Love, Your Favorite Sister Missionary,
Sister Harrison
