This week has seemed like the longest week of my life, but at the same time it has gone by so fast.
We had a wonderful P day this last week. The Powells in our Ward offered to feed the whole zone sour dough pancakes for breakfast! Brother Powell said that when the starter for the pancakes was made it was in 1850 when his ancestors were crossing the plains, so freaking cool, and honestly they were delicious. They were so kind when they offered to feed our whole zone, and they thought we were crazy when we told them that we would help them clean up! When you have 15 ish missionaries cleaning up you can get it done a lot quicker then 2 people. It was so awesome and we got to know them a little better and they are having us over for dinner soon!
After breakfast the zone leaders tried to have a zone hiking activity. Well this was a very sketchy hike that consisted of us walking up a hill behind Carl's Jr. In town. It was straight up the entire way, but I will say that it did have some great views at the very end of the dollar tree in town! More then anything it showed Sister Sorensen and I how much we are out of shape, we decided to start running for exercises the next day, wish us luck.
Sister Sorensen and I spent the time tracting. Our mission president this week gave us the challenge to find 4 new investigators this week and to invite someone to baptism every single day. Well Sister Sorensen and I role played for a good 30 minutes how we were going to invite someone to baptism. And I would've worked if we would have knocked on someone's door who wanted to talk to us. We ran into a lady who lived in Utah for a big chunk of her life, a naked man and a man who told us his IQ was in the top 1% in the country and that he didn't need religion to help him in his life, he was also an atheist. It was a pretty rough night. The Elders told us to use the approach of just being Bold and inviting the, to baptism when they first answer the door! Well that's what we are going to try tomorrow!
After lots of tracting with no success, we decided to go see a less active in the area. It is hard to do tracting at about 7:45 pm because all of a sudden it goes pitch black, and for sister it doesn't seem safe at all, so we try to find other things to fill our time. We went and saw Sarah, and just a few weeks previous she wasn't in a good place and she was really struggling. I was actually very nervous to go see her because of everything that happened. Well she opened her door with open arms and invited us in. She told us that she started reading the Book of Mormon again and she is already seeing how it is helping her life. She has mentally decided not to let the little things in life bother her anymore. So then I asked her the question, what are you striving for? She told us that she is striving to feel the spirit like she did when she was little and went to church. She is looking for her awe ha moment. It made me think about the videos by Elder Bednar that are entitled Patterns of Light, look them up, they are AMAZING. There are three ways of receiving answers and direction in life. One is like turning on the light switch, it's a day and night difference when we receive the answers, this way is not so common, at least for me. Then there's the sunrise, where we slowly begin receiving answers little by little. But then there is the fog. Where we have to take one step at a time in the fog and have to take a leap of faith in order to know where to go. We are always going toward the light. And right now Sarah is moving towards the light and is progressing, we all need to do the things that are critical to our spiritual health. Just like our bodies need CPR sometimes, so does our spirit. And this means, Church, Prayer and Scriptures. I know that as I am doing the things that our Heavenly Father asks us to do that I am able to better receive answers to my prayers.
Sister Sorensen and I did service at the Red Cross this week and it really was very boring. We literally sat there for 5 hours reading conference talks on our iPads because we didn't have the opportunity to do anything else. At one point we asked if they needed us and they told us to stay... Well we got in 5 hours of just serve!
The Book of Mormon is Amazing, I finished 2 Nephi this week and I am just in love with this book of promise. I read this quote this week from the institute manual and it said:
President Gordon B. Hinckley’s promise to all those who diligently study the Book of Mormon: “Regardless of how many times you previously may have read the Book of Mormon, there will come into your lives and into your homes an added measure of the Spirit of the Lord, a strengthened resolution to walk in obedience to His commandments, and a stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son of God"
And I know that is true. As we read in Moroni 10:3-5 we know as we read with a contrite heart and real intent that we will receive a witness of the truth of this book. And I know that I receive so much strength as I read this book daily!
We had dinner with this lady in our Ward who has recently started coming back to church after being inactive for years after a divorce with her ex husband. She told us a lot of things about her life. But one thing stood out to me. Since her divorce she hasn't been back to the temple and she is so scared to go back. She has started to take the temple prep classes again and said that she is learning a lot but when it comes to eternal marriages it is really hard for her. We were able to talk about the blessings that come from the temple. And that its going to be hard, but that it is going to be so worth it when she goes. I am so excited to be able to go to the temple next month with my zone. We will be going to the Medford temple, I have been craving temple time.
Sister Sorensen and I decided to be brave and bold and invite to baptism with a door approach. We literally said, "Hello, will you follow the example of Jesus Christ and be baptized by someone holding the priesthood authority of God?", I know you are probably dying to know how that turned out, well he said, "well I'm Catholic so I have already been baptized and I am not interested." He then closed the door! But then as we were able to say that once, it began to be easier and easier to say it as a door approach! We hope we can find someone this way!
Sister Sorensen and I made felt sandwiches for Elena and Zach's FHE this week and they are so cute, we will have to send a video of us making our prayer sandwiches!
We offered service to a woman this week and ended up gardening with my skirt on and surprisingly didn't get dirty, although my knees hurt really bad after an hour of kneel on the concrete! She was a really nice lady and told us about how she grew up in Utah, she told us that she is never interested in joining our church though. At the end of our gardening Sister Sorensen and I took our Mission Presidents challenge for the week and challenged her to baptism! Well she said if she knew it was true then she would join, it's better then a no in our books! We are planning on stopping by her house again soon.
This week we taught a lesson to a new investigator that we found on Sunday. And guess what? She had already read the intro to the Book of Mormon and the first chapter before we got there! Sister Sorensen and j were so impressed, that had never happened before, and the whole time we talked she was just amazed by every single word we said! Although it was only a 30 minute lesson, I can see great things coming from Dale.
I would just like my fan club to know how door approaches work out sometimes:
*knock knock* - door opens
Sister Harrison *as happy as I can be on a hot Wednesday afternoon*: Hello! We are Sister Missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and we are going around sharing a message about Jesus Christ today, do you have a faith in Jesus Christ?
Old Man: *confused* Jehovahs Witnesses?
Sister Harrison: *also confused* no.... Missionaries.... Latter-day Saints?
Old Man *who obviously doesn't want to be talking to us*: Well I am a Christian so have a great day. *starts closing the door*
Sister Sorensen: *not ready to give up the fight* Oh really? We're Christians too!
Old Man: *surprised* are you born again?
Sister Harrison: *confused* what?
Old Man: Have you accepted Christ as your Savior?
Sister Sorensen: *with conviction* Yes!
Old Man: well then your Christian! *duh* well I dated a Mormon so I know everything about your religion and your false so bye.
Okay then.... Let's go to the next door!
Sometimes Sister Sorensen and I find that we are tracking our souls out and we get nothing in return. Tracting drains you spiritually, mentally and physically, man it is exhausting!
We had a movie night with the young men this week! I know that kind of sounds weird, don't worry we had a sister there too, it was a lot of fun, popcorn and everything. We watched the restoration as part of our recent convert lessons for Cameron. It was awesome because I surprisingly hadn't watched it my whole mission. I love the stories of Joseph Smith that show the trials that he went through and the things he did for the gospel to be restored. I found myself tearing up for no particular reason, but I do know that I have a strong testimony of Joseph smith and the work that he did while on the earth.
It rained this week! Friday was the first day since I have been in Oregon that I wore a cardigan all day, and now it is going to be in the 90s on Sunday! I thought Utah had crazy weather changes, man Oregon is about the same! Sister Sorensen is dying because it never got this hot on the coast, but she will survive and get used to it!
We had District Meeting on Friend and during accountability, where we talk about our numbers, Sister Sorensen and I had 0 new investigators for the week. We were super bummed because of the goal the President had asked us to achieve. Well we got to work after our meetings and we found 2 new investigators! We were so excited we had to take an ice cream break!
Well my wonderful fan club, this is the moment you have all been waiting for! New missionary torture *clears throat* New Missionary Training is now Over. So you do not have to listen to me complain about it anymore! It has been rough but I am so glad for all the things that I have learned from training and for the people who have taught me. Now Sister Sorensen and I get to plan another hour of missionary duties into our day!
Sister Sorensen and I have been running into so many bugs while tracting. I have choked on 3 bugs this week! So freaking nasty! I don't know where they are coming from but if this could stop- that would be great. Although it brought quite a few laughs when it happened!
We were able to go to Women's Conference this weekend and man was it amazing. I think that the spirit was speaking to me left and right. My favorite talk of the whole session was when President Uchtdorf talked on faith. Faith has been something that I have been working on since I have come on my mission, it's one of those things, that like a testimony you have to continually strive to work on. If you haven't yet listened to his talk, go listen to it now, it is already onLDS.org.
After the conference we were talking to the sister training leaders about the upcoming transfer, and I looked over in the corner of my eye and I saw this lady in our Ward, Marilyn Russell, and I love her. And I had a feeling that I needed to go talk to her, but I was talking to someone and she was talking to someone and I just ignored it. Well we ended up being some of the last to leave the chapel and I had seen her leave awhile before. Well when we walked outside we saw that she was still sitting in her car. She ended up telling us that during the conference she had to leave and she walked in right at the end of President Uchtdorfs talk when he was talking about the missionaries and fourth floor, last door. She said when she walked in she knew we needed that message and she hoped we felt that way too. This experience taught me a few things 1- members are always looking out for their missionaries 2- listen to the spirit or promptings when you hear them the first time 3- Heavenly Father knows what you are going through and will send people your way to be able to help meet your needs. There is a quote by President Kimball and it says "God does notice us, and watches over us, but it is usually through another person that he meets our needs. Therefore, it is vital that we serve each other in the kingdom."
This week while tracting we met this guy and he was walking down the street and I was planning on talking to him, but then all of a sudden he was talking to us! Just letting you know, this does not happen very often at all. Well he asked us about our name badges and asked if we worked for a company. We told him no but that we were missionaries for our church. He was like oh so Mormons! He then told us this story about how one time he was hitch hiking and this bus picked him up with a bunch of old folks. Well this bus broke down in Utah during a snow stone. Luckily on the bus there was a wood stove so he decided to go find a tree, well he cut down the tree and brought it back. The next day the owners of the tree saw his foot prints in the snow and called the police. The police showed up to the bus and asked him if he did it, and he confessed. But instead of putting him in jail the LDS family found out about his situation and brought him real wood and food for days for everyone on the bus. This man talked about how much respect he has for the people of our religion. This mans name is Tag and I am grateful that I was able to meet someone who loves the people of our religion without even being a member. We talked to him about the Book of Mormon, but he wasn't interested, he just told us to keep doing what we were doing!
We didn't find any new investigators on Sunday, but we did go to the church and we found peach cobbler. It was awesome, Sister Sorensen and I at the end of the night decided to go into the church and spend some time trying to organize our area book on our ipads, well the other ward that shares our building was there for a bishop youth discussion and they offered us peach cobbler! Well we weren't going to complain.
We met this crazy guy name Mark while we were tracting with the Elders this week. He was trying to make us give him a ride and he just kept saying I am a real person, I am a real person! He told us his full name, his name was Mark, he told us his full address, his drivers license number, etc. Basically the only thing that he didn't tell us was his social security number. He wanted a ride to the coast, he said I thought you guys were Christians, I am a good person! I only smoke pot! Well eventually the Elders saw what was happening then they came and talked to this crazy guy and he finally left us alone, weird people here in Oregon.
This is just another funny tracting experience for this week, we were knocking on doors using the door approach of inviting people to baptism. Well this woman came to the door, looked through the window on the door and locked the door then walked away. She then went through her kitchen and living room and closed all of her blinds, honestly in my head I feel like it would have been less work to just open the door and tell us she wasn't interested, hahaha.
In Relief Society we had an awesome lesson on Standing With the Leaders of the Church by Elder Rasband. It was perfect timing because we have Conference coming up this next week. I invite everyone to go back and to read over this talk as we prepare for conference this week. I know that as we pray with a sincere heart to our Heavenly Father with questions we have in mind that we will be able to find answers to our questions. I know that as we turn to our leaders of our Church during this darkening world that we will be blessed for our efforts. I am so grateful for the knowledge that of Living Day Prophets. I am so grateful for the testimony that President Thomas S Monson has and the keys that he holds. I love Prophets. Have a great conference weekend this week!
We had dinner with the Harkers on Sunday, and I guess after we left Emily, the one who just came home form her mission in Mongolia, said that we were a really great companionship and that she has high hopes for us in this area. I know she is right, I can't wait for all the miracles that are going to come this next transfer!
Thank you all for your continued support! I am loving it here in the 'Burg, Sister Sorensen and I are working hard in the Lord's vineyard. Have a great week this week! Love you!
