Hello my wonderful fan club, I hope your week has been a great one and that you continue to see how Heavenly Father is blessing you in your lives. I miss you all and I hope that you continue to not forget about me
I love emailing home, have I ever told my fan club that before? It is a little bit of a break from my everyday missionary life, but it is also really stressful trying to respond to everyone's emails, so if you don't hear back from me it is not because I don't love you but this last week emailing was really nice and it was really laid back. So yeah, emailing home can be fun!
This week we went to the cutest little shop in Roseburg. It is an old pharmacy that a family has made into a little nick nack shop- seriously I could have spent hours there. I found a couple things that I wanted to send home then after I paid they offered free wrapping services, who would say no to that! They wrapped it beautifully, I hope everyone at home loves their duck poop.
Was planning on eating dinner at home when bam, Sister Harker texted us. I think she has magical powers, that or she has our dinner calendar on her phone. But it was really nice of her to text us. We had dinner then Sister Harker wanted to go get something for dessert at Sherm's, a local grocery store. Well along the way there are these signs for duck crossings. So Sister Harker made Emily park the car on the side of the road, we then marched across a field to this sign. We completed her life long dream of taking a picture by these signs. I am sure more then 100 people drove past while this adventure occurred probably thinking to themselves, those crazy Mormons.
I love tracting, I love tracting yes I do, yes I do, na na na na na na, na na na na na na. This is a song Sister Sorensen usually finds me singing every time we go tracting/finding. I really am getting sick of tracting, I am ready to teach some lessons now! This week Sister Sorensen and I are dedicating part of our time just for the people we are already meeting with. Hopefully this helps us find success here in the Burg.
This week all the zone leaders, district leaders and sister training leaders went to MLC, mission leadership council. They have it every first Tuesday of the month. Well this week everyone went and then came back and told me that Sister Nowell said hi and that she misses me, well I miss her too Elder Mafi shook my hand and said, Sister Nowell told me to shake your hand and say it was a hug from her. It was weird but it was thoughtful.
At UCAN this week Gary, our supervisor basically, told us to go wash tubs. Well I had never washed tubs before so I asked how we do that. He quickly explain that it was just like doing dishes in a restaurant. Well he said that to someone who has never worked in the food industry. Well I learned something new this week, rinse, wash, rinse, sanitize. My hands still smell like bleach, he didn't tell us about the gloves until after the fact.
My companions must think that I have been to cosmetology school or something because both of them have trusted me in dying their hair 🏽. This week we dyed Sister Sorensen's hair and I will have to say it looks pretty good. It was weird because her hair is so freakin thin, I had so much she left over I thought about putting some in my hair!
This week my little brother went into the MTC. He is off to Italy in just 6 short weeks. I am so proud of him and all the things that he has been able to accomplish this last year. He is truly an amazing example to me, and even though I am 1,000 miles away from Utah at the moment, I am still cheering him on! Man I love that kid.
This week we had a lesson with someone at 9 am, not normal for us missionaries, we are usually studying till 10. But on Saturday we tracked into this guy that said he had just gotten home from work so he was going to go sleep. We asked him if we could come by again sometime and he literally said, sure 9 am on Wednesday. So that is when we showed up! He looked at us like we were crazy and said not interested then shut the door. Well that was a nice try I guess. We had been trying to find someone to come with us because he was a single man, well no one could, Heavenly Father sure does know what is up.
We went and met this lady named Terry. She has been taught by a lot of missionaries in the past. She moved to Roseburg right after her husband spontaneously passed away. At the time she didn't want anything do with religion, so she told the missionaries they could stop by, but no preaching. Well her house became the missionary hang out spot and she loved it. She said it's probably been a year since missionaries had stopped by, so she wants to make us lunch sometime! She was a chef for a living! So you could say Sister Sorensen and I are pretty excited. Although I am not really sure how receptive she is going to be to the gospel. I don't understand how people can love love love missionaries but then not want us to fulfill our calling by teaching them. But that's okay, some how she will be taught!
Sister Sorensen were tracting, like we always do, and we found a new investigator. We taught her all about the Book of Mormon and asked if we could come back again. At first she said that she had a lot of religious people that came to her house and that she should probably stop. Then we asked if she had read the Book of Mormon and she told us she had a hard time reading, so we offered to read it with her, and she accepted! Well after this we ask for her name and number, her name is Grace. Later we found out that Grace was the same person that got no where with the elders, maybe she needs the sisters! Time will tell!
The Oregon winter is now upon us. It is cloudy all the time. And even when the weather says it's not going to rain it will randomly rain. It is lovely. I am loving this weather.
We had dinner at the Stott's twice this week. They truly are answers to prayers. Well as per our mission presidents challenge we get to sing at every dinner with a member. The second night the Stott's decided to sing to us. We revived a beautiful rendition of Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera . We then sang a hymn together to bring the spirit, but it was a fun surprise!
Sister Sorensen and I went to Walmart this week to get some ice cream , because it was needed. Well when we were there we saw this lady with a Oregon Ducks sweatshirt, this is very normal, but then she had Utah utes pajama pants! I seriously wanted to comment on them so bad, it's not like you see those everyday in Oregon!
Had an amazing lesson with Elena this week, we asked her the question, what would it mean to you to be baptized? She said, It would get me cleansed, give me a new start, it would get me more involved with Christ and become a member of HIS church . Tears came to the surface. This is what I have been hoping and praying for Elena. The funny thing is, she actually brought up what we were going to talk about in our lesson with her before we could. She talked about how Ron and Kathy, the members she is living with, keep talking about how Elena and Zach should get married. Well that's what we were going to tell her! We talked about the law of chastity and about how they can't be baptized unless they are married. She isn't sure that she wants to marry Zach. Right now we are praying for her to find her answer. But she said that she wanted baptism for her girls. I love them. She wants us to continue meeting with them and that their goal is baptism, together as a family .
Had a lesson with Vickie this week, after not meeting with her for 30 days! Sister Sorensen had not even met her yet! Well it was a good get to know you visit for Sister Sorensen to know how to teach Vickie. We talked about the importance of Church because that is what she is struggling with right now. At one point I asked Vickie, what do you have to lose by going to church. Her response was that she didn't have anything to lose but everything to gain. This was the answer we needed from Vickie. This gave us a little bit of hope that she will not be an investigator forever but that eventually, with time, she will be baptized.
This week for rescue night we only had one sister show up, but it was awesome. We were able to go with Sister Smith. Once we got in her car she explained to us that she was really really nervous to go out with us. We laughed and we said there is no reason to be nervous at all, and in the end she did amazing. The purpose of rescue night is to introduce the missionaries to less actives, and she did her job well. Don't be scared of the missionaries, honestly we are just as much out of our comfort zones as you are, we are on the same team!!
We at at the Gausnells for dinner this week and we shared with them a Mormon message titled mountains to climb, I invite everyone to go watch it. Anyway then one of the ladies asked if we still sing with the members and we said of course, well she said can we sing I'm a little teapot ️? I looked at Sister Sorensen and she looked at me then all of a sudden we were singing I'm a little teapot! It was hilarious!
This week we had Zone Training Meeting, which was awesome. I love when we are able to learn from our leaders and when we are able to be strengthened spiritually. This training meeting consisted of a new planning idea that they taught us about. For our weekly planning session that we hold once a week they want us to plan for 10 days, and in those 10 days they want us to have someone to visit in every slot for every 15 minutes. Sister Sorensen and I did this and man it took forever, but I am sure grateful for it when it comes to nightly planning. I think when I come home from my mission I will be a crazy planner, I will need to have every minute of my day planned, so I am never bored.
This week we were able to go to dinner with a gentlemen and the Ward, and he took us to Red Robin ! Usually he brings what he calls his "chaperone" but they were all busy. Basically we are just fourth wheeling their dates. So awkward. But this time he came with no one. It is funny going with him to dinner because he is older and can't really hear anything so we have to yell at him to have a conversation. We love Brother Benson. And after the Red Robin French fries I think I was in a potatoe coma.
During our correlation with our Ward Mission Leader this week, Sister Sorensen and I were so giggly. It felt like anything we said came out hilarious. I think it gave Brother Heirs a good laugh and I think it made our correlation more fun. They are supposed to be calling more Ward missionaries this Sunday! We are all really excited for this to FINALLY happen.
On Saturday morning we got a call from President telling us that he was coming down to have a meeting with Sister Sorensen. So I went on splits with our Sister Training Leader and we went to go have a lesson with someone who ended up not being home. But when we came back President told me that Sister Rhoton (I was in the MTC together, she is the one that went to Lone Peak) is coming up from Yreka California on Monday and she is going to be my new companion, while Sister Sorensen is going home. This came as a surprise to me, but I am glad that I was able to serve with Sister Sorensen again, Melrose will miss her.
After that we were able to go out to get ice cream with our Sister Training Leaders. They are awesome and I love them so much, they are Sister Rhees and Sister Asregado, who goes home this transfer. I think I have eaten more ice cream in the last four months then is allowed in normal society. President Russell allows, even encourages ice cream breaks, we need to stop!
We Visited less actives, on Sunday, and a dog scratched our car, that will be an interesting call to the vehicle coordinator on Monday. We put the car in park and literally 4 dogs came running towards us. I turned to Sister Sorensen and told her I wasn't getting out of the car, suddenly she started praying and we were getting out of the car. I have heard too many stories about missionaries getting bit by dogs, I didn't want to risk it! But we are good, our car is a different story.
While trying to visit less actives we went to this one home and members opened the door who were very not inactive. It was awkward, our whole door approach changed right on the spot, they probably thought we were crazy, it's fine. Who ever put them on the inactive list probably isn't paying attention in sacrament meeting.
On our District Blitz Sister Sorensen and I found a new investigator! His name is Darren. It was hilarious. We were walking down this street with the sister from Sutherlin and Sister Sorensen and I weren't feeling good about it. It was 7:30 at night and this street that we picked had no lights, and I had to go to the bathroom. So we were ready to quit. But the other sister to,d us to say a prayer and keep going. Literally the next door we found Darren! His son answered the door and Sister Sorensen whispered, "are your parents home?" He said, "yeah..." she then continued to whisper, "can we talk to them." He then closed the door to go get them and I asked Sister Sorensen why she was whispering, she hadn't even noticed she was doing it! But Darren came out and told us he had a friend growing up that was Mormon, but that his friend pushed it really hard and it made him not interested. Well he ended up saying after our little visit that he would read the Book of Mormon, and then he hugged us. So weird. Sister Sorensen and I freaked out. But it was a great visit.
On Sunday we were out in the boonies, trying to visit some less actives and we had no luck. Well Sister Harker had told us about a little garden that was near by and we decided to go give it a look see. Well, I could have probably spent hours in this garden. It was so cute and there was so much to see. In different sections they had different types of garden, a Japanese garden, a veggie garden, a flower garden, etc. It was so much fun to be able to have a 10 minute break and to look around with Sister Sorensen, I think this is something that we will be coming back to in our near future when we are out in the area!
Well one thing that I think my fan club should know for next week is that my Pday is going to be on Thursday. The mission rule is that we have our temple day and our Pday be on the same day. This can be good and bad, but I am trying to stay positive about it because I am just so excited to go to the temple! We will be going to the Medford temple, which is about an hour and a half away. It was weird coming from Utah where I drove past a temple at least twice a day, once going some where then once on the way home, to a place where the temple is no where in sight. I am so excited to go to the temple. Anyway, we are going to the 10 am session so we have to leave here at 8 am. If you could email like it was a normal Pday, that would be awesome. I will have time in the car to email but I will have to wait till I have wifi to send them off. So it may not be until the evening when you hear back from me. But I am getting mixed messages from people, so I might still have my normal Pday I guess. Just email me on Monday and if you don't hear from me, don't fear, I will email you later in the week I just don't want to get on my email and see nothing!
Anyway, this week was a rough one but I am still holding strong. I hope that everything at home is going good. Work Hard everyone! Remember who you are and what God expects you to become. I love you all and miss you! I hope you have a great week!
